A New Name for a Bright Future: The Evolution of Our Master’s Program

Beginning in Fall 2025, the program will be renamed the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) — a change that aligns with Rice’s commitment to integrative and innovative education.

Rice University is excited to announce that the Master of Liberal Studies program is evolving to better reflect its interdisciplinary nature. Beginning in Fall 2025, the program will be renamed the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies (MIS) — a change that aligns with Rice’s commitment to integrative and innovative education.

Why the Name Change?

Since its inception in 2005, the program has embraced a broad, interdisciplinary approach, encouraging students to explore complex global issues through the integration of the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences and the arts. Over the years, it has evolved into a dynamic and forward-thinking graduate program, adapting to the changing needs of students and society. The new name marks the beginning of an exciting new era — one that honors its strong foundation while embracing the future of interdisciplinary education. This change more accurately conveys the program’s unique educational experience and enhances its recognition among academic institutions, employers, and prospective students.

“This name change reflects what we’ve always been — a program deeply rooted in interdisciplinary inquiry,” said Rebecca Sharp, director of Interdisciplinary Studies. Our students have long engaged in rigorous, thought-provoking coursework that crosses traditional academic boundaries. The new name clarifies that to the broader community and reaffirms our commitment to providing a transformative educational experience.”

What This Means for Current and Future Students

The transition to the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies will take effect in Fall 2025, but the program’s core values and structure remain unchanged. Current students will have the option to graduate with either an MLS or MIS degree, ensuring continuity and choice.

The MIS program is designed with flexibility in mind, offering both part-time and full-time study options to accommodate the diverse needs of its students. With evening classes available, the program is accessible to working professionals, recent graduates and retirees alike, allowing students to balance their studies with their personal and professional commitments. Whether pursuing the degree for career advancement, intellectual enrichment, or lifelong learning, students will find a supportive and adaptable academic environment that meets them where they are.

“This is an exciting step forward,” said Robert Bruce, dean of Rice Continuing Studies. “The Master of Interdisciplinary Studies name more clearly communicates the program’s depth and adaptability, positioning our graduates for success in an increasingly interconnected world. It also aligns the school’s strategic plan and with Rice’s broader vision of fostering interdisciplinary scholarship and research.”

Future Curriculum and Pathway Possibilities

As part of this transition, the MIS program will continue to evolve to meet the needs of today’s learners. The curriculum will maintain its strong foundation in the liberal arts while expanding to offer opportunities for students seeking a more career-focused degree. Future curriculum enhancements will further emphasize the program’s interdisciplinary focus, ensuring students are equipped with the analytical, creative and problem-solving skills necessary for diverse career and academic pathways. Additionally, new opportunities for collaboration and innovative learning experiences will strengthen the program’s ability to prepare graduates for dynamic and evolving professional landscapes.

The MIS program will continue to welcome students from all walks of life, including recent college graduates, working professionals and retirees — each driven by intellectual curiosity and a passion for lifelong learning, interdisciplinary exploration and personal enrichment. The program's interdisciplinary approach ensures that students of all backgrounds — whether they are pursuing new career opportunities, deepening their academic pursuits or engaging in learning for its own sake — find a supportive and enriching environment tailored to their aspirations.

A Natural Evolution Aligned with Rice’s Mission

This change supports Rice University’s broader commitment to interdisciplinary research and education, as outlined in its strategic priorities. By adopting a name that better reflects its academic framework, the program strengthens its reputation and appeal to a diverse community of lifelong learners.

For prospective students interested in a graduate experience that encourages intellectual exploration across disciplines, the Master of Interdisciplinary Studies provides a flexible and enriching academic path.
